Pre-location scouting involves all the planning and actions that you take before going out into the field. This element of landscape photography determines how successful the actual location scouting and the resulting photos will be. In some cases, the success of a photo or even a whole trip will already be decided by good pre-location scouting. By familiarizing yourself with the area and subjects, you’ll gain valuable knowledge into which photo techniques will be best for your shoot when you finally embark upon your trip.
Being able to find a unique and powerful composition is an important aspect of landscape photography. Any landscape photographer who wants to create their own unique style will benefit from mastering this skill.
Max Rive has spent the last 10 years developing and perfecting his ability to find compositions at almost any location. According to Max, ‘’finding your own location is something everyone can learn. It is something that happens when curiosity, creativity and ambition meet. Everyone has it, you just have to start with it and be aware you can find anything, eventually’’.
SHOOTING TIPS AND TRICKS
You may think there is not much else you can do other than pressing the trigger when taking a photo. However, there are some tips and tricks which your photography can greatly benefit from. Max Rive will demonstrate in-depth what he has learned over the years when taking a photo.
This aspect doesn’t need any further introduction. Processing your photos in Photoshop or Lightroom can make all the difference. Many photographers see the photo taken on location as a starting point for the final result.
As Max says, “you should not separate each aspect of photography from each other but connect them instead. Whether you scout for a location with Google Earth or are scouting and shooting on location, you must already keep the possibilities with post-processing in mind. This is something I’ve learned after around 5 to 6 years, which has made me much more productive. Instead of aiming for a certain light like a red sunrise or sunset, I try to translate the mood I felt on the scene with post-processing.”
Max Rive began making panoramas in Microsoft Paint back in 2009. He won the International Pano Awards in 2016 and since then, his panoramas on 500px have become some of the most popular images within his portfolio.
Says Max, ‘’the success to a good panorama is to keep all rules that you have for a ‘normal’ photo in mind and apply it to the panorama you want to take. Balance in the composition, the presence of a subject, the balance between colors and the separation between layers are just as important. However, it is essential to recognize when a location will benefit from a large field of view (and take a panorama) or just go for a single shot instead. You must not take a pano just to take a pano. It must be for a reason.”
If you’re familiar with Max Rive’s panoramas, then you will know all about his incredible mountain selfies. These have won him multiple international awards, with some being featured on Microsoft Windows as well as the Alibaba website.
According to Max, “I began with taking mountain selfies because I wanted to translate the feeling of being high in the mountains into a photo and the inclusion of a person helped me to do that. It gives the scene a sense of scale, shows the story of adventure and helps the viewer to see the scene through the eyes of a person. It can also add incredible counterbalance when there is sunlight in the frame. Lastly, it can make up for the absence of any foreground objects when being high above the treeline.”
Landscape photography is not only about taking photos of landscapes, it involves a lot more than just that. Many photographers try to pursue their dream of turning their hobby into a full-time job. Max Rive will share his honest opinion about the potential this job has to offer in today’s market. He will also tell you the pitfalls and challenges, as well as tips on how to make money and start a possible photography career.
